Unemployment:

In Haryana, over 46,000 graduates and postgraduates recently applied for sanitation jobs offering just ₹15,000 per month. This fact alone reveals the stark reality of unemployment in India, where even well-educated individuals struggle to find meaningful work. Despite numerous government measures and economic growth, unemployment remains a significant challenge in India. Why does this problem persist despite all efforts to address it?

According to the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) for 2022-23, India’s unemployment rate was 4.1% in rural areas and 6.8% in urban regions.

Even more concerning is the female labor force participation rate, which was just 24%, indicating a serious gender gap in employment opportunities. Furthermore, around 10% of the employed population is underemployed, meaning people are stuck in jobs that do not match their skills or provide adequate wages.

Adding to these concerns, data from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) shows that by mid-2024, the national unemployment rate fluctuated between 7% and 8%. States like Haryana, Rajasthan, and Jammu & Kashmir reported even higher rates, often exceeding 10%, while southern states like Karnataka and Tamil Nadu had lower unemployment rates.

One of the major challenges facing India’s job market is the mismatch between skills and job requirements. While sectors like technology and digital services demand advanced skills, a large part of India’s workforce still lacks adequate training. The agriculture sector, which employs around 42% of the workforce but contributes less than 15% to GDP, also reflects a large amount of disguised unemployment.

Conclusion

The unemployment crisis in India reveals that the issue is not just about the number of jobs available but also the quality of those jobs and the match between education and employment opportunities. The data shows that while efforts have been made, there are deep-rooted structural problems that prevent meaningful progress. Youth unemployment, underemployment, and gender disparities persist, despite numerous programs designed to tackle these issues.

As we reflect on the story of educated individuals applying for low-paying jobs like sanitation work, we must question whether current policies are addressing the root causes of unemployment. It’s time for India to rethink its approach—focusing not just on creating jobs but on creating the right kind of jobs. The solution lies in long-term changes to education, skill development, and economic planning. Will India rise to the challenge and ensure meaningful employment for all, or will the gap between job seekers and job creators continue to widen? This question should leave us pondering whether we are truly moving toward sustainable economic growth or merely treating the symptoms of a deeper issue.
